Connect a receipt printer to Claude

Printercow puts a USB ESC/POS receipt printer on Wi-Fi and gives Claude an MCP server for it. Claude works out the printer's commands, prints, and reads the printer's status reply. No computer stays next to the printer.

Claude cannot reach a USB port.

Claude runs in the cloud or in your terminal. A receipt printer has a USB port and no network. Printercow is the piece in between: a dongle that is the printer's USB host and an MCP server that hands Claude the USB connection.

How it works.

  1. 01

    Plug in the dongle

Slide on the tip that fits the printer's USB port and power the dongle from a 2 A USB-C charger.

  2. 02

    Put it on Wi-Fi

Open the setup page in Chrome or Edge on Android, Windows or Mac. It pairs over Bluetooth and joins your 2.4 GHz network.

  3. 03

    Add the MCP server

Copy the MCP URL from the Connect page into Claude Code or claude.ai, then sign in to Printercow once and allow access.

  4. 04

    Ask Claude to print

Claude lists your dongles, reads the ESC/POS guide, sends the commands and checks the printer's status. When it works, it proposes a recipe for you to approve.

Claude Code in two lines.

In claude.ai, add a custom connector with the same URL instead. After you approve the recipe, Claude gets a print tool of its own, such as print_0416_5011.

[ .SH ]
1 claude mcp add --transport http printercow <MCP URL from the Connect page>
 2
3 # in Claude Code: run /mcp and sign in to Printercow once, then ask
4 > Print "Hello world" on the kitchen printer.

What it needs, and its limits.

  • ESC/POS receipt printers over USB. Runs on a real 80 mm receipt printer as well as end to end against a simulated one.
  • A remote MCP client: Claude Code, claude.ai, or another client with remote HTTP MCP and OAuth or an API token.
  • Setup needs Bluetooth in Chrome or Edge on Android, Windows or Mac. iPhone browsers have no Bluetooth; the Bluefy app does.
  • Every print goes through the Printercow cloud, so the dongle needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with internet access.

Questions.

Which receipt printers can Claude use through Printercow?

USB receipt printers that speak ESC/POS, the command set most thermal receipt printers use. Claude reads the printer's USB descriptors and Printercow's ESC/POS guide, so a no-name printer works the same way as a branded one. So far this is tested against a simulated ESC/POS printer.

What can Claude do once it is connected?

See your dongles and what is plugged into them, send USB commands to the printer, ask you yes/no questions on the dongle page, and propose recipes. Vendor-specific USB requests and firmware-update interfaces stay blocked unless the dongle's owner allows them. You can disconnect Claude on the Connect page at any time.

Does Claude need to stay connected for printing to work?

No. Once you approve the recipe Claude proposed, print is also a REST endpoint. Your own code can call it with an API token, with no AI involved.

Start with hello world.
