A USB receipt printer with no computer attached

A USB printer needs a USB host, which is usually a PC that has to stay on. The Printercow dongle takes that role: it plugs into the printer, joins your Wi-Fi, and takes print jobs from your AI or your code.

The printer only needs a host, not a whole PC.

A receipt printer does not care what is on the other end of its cable, as long as something speaks USB to it. Printercow is that something, the size of a matchbox and powered from a phone charger.

How it works.

  1. 01

    Plug it into the printer

Slide on the tip that fits the printer's USB port and power the dongle from a 2 A USB-C charger.

  2. 02

    Put it on Wi-Fi

Pair over Bluetooth from Chrome or Edge and choose a 2.4 GHz network. The dashboard then shows the printer the dongle detected.

  3. 03

    Teach it once

An AI client such as Claude works out the printer's commands and proposes a recipe. You approve it.

  4. 04

    Print from anywhere

Your AI prints through the MCP server; your code calls the print action's REST endpoint.

What it needs, and its limits.

  • Not a print server: the printer does not appear in Windows or macOS, and it does not tunnel USB to a computer.
  • ESC/POS receipt printers first. Runs on a real 80 mm receipt printer as well as end to end against a simulated one.
  • Full-speed USB (12 Mbit/s), one device per dongle, no hubs. The dongle supplies up to 1 A to the device.
  • Needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with internet access; every print goes through the Printercow cloud.

Questions.

Will the printer show up in Windows or macOS?

No. Printercow is not a print server and does not install a printer queue. You print through Printercow's MCP server from an AI client, or through its REST API from your code.

Does the printer need internet access?

The dongle does. It joins 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and every print goes through the Printercow cloud.

How is the dongle powered?

From a 2 A USB-C phone charger. It gives the printer up to 1 A on its USB port; most receipt printers have their own power supply anyway.
